State Department Issues Worldwide Caution as Iran Conflict Escalates
Americans overseas warned of airspace closures, travel disruptions, and potential security threats following U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a Worldwide Caution alert urging Americans abroad—particularly those in the Middle East—to heighten their vigilance as tensions with Iran intensify.
In a notice released February 28, the State Department advised U.S. citizens to monitor security updates from their nearest embassy or consulate and prepare for potential travel disruptions caused by “periodic airspace closures.” Officials specifically warned that Americans may face rapidly changing conditions as military operations unfold across the region.
The advisory follows joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and subsequent retaliatory actions by Tehran aimed at U.S. military assets in neighboring countries. The situation has created significant uncertainty throughout the region’s aviation and security infrastructure.
Air Travel Across Middle East Disrupted
Airlines and aviation authorities have scrambled to reroute or cancel flights as multiple governments imposed temporary airspace restrictions.
According to flight tracking data, airspace over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Bahrain, and Kuwait has seen dramatic reductions in traffic. Aircraft already in flight during the initial wave of strikes were forced to divert or return to their points of origin.
Major regional hubs have also been impacted:
Dubai International Airport temporarily suspended operations.
Airports in Doha and Abu Dhabi announced similar halts or severe service reductions.
Major Middle Eastern carriers, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Kuwait Airways, canceled hundreds of flights.
In the United States, Delta Air Lines issued alerts regarding cancellations affecting Tel Aviv and Dubai routes. United Airlines warned customers of disruptions to Tel Aviv service, while American Airlines cautioned that flights routing through Doha’s Hamad International Airport in Qatar could be affected.
Travelers are being urged to check directly with their carriers and remain flexible as conditions continue to evolve.
Embassy Advisories and Security Warnings
U.S. diplomatic posts across the region have also issued local security notices. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem reminded American citizens to maintain situational awareness and know the location of the nearest shelter in the event of rocket, missile, mortar, or drone attacks—incidents that officials warned can occur “without warning.”
The State Department emphasized that Americans abroad should:
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
Review personal security plans
Monitor local news reports
Follow instructions from local authorities and U.S. diplomatic personnel
Not the First Global Alert
This is not the first time Washington has issued a worldwide caution amid Middle East instability. Similar alerts were released in 2023 following the Hamas-led terror attack on Israel and again during previous U.S.-Israeli military operations targeting Iranian facilities.
With military exchanges continuing and the regional security picture shifting by the hour, U.S. officials say Americans overseas should remain alert and prepared for further disruptions.
The situation remains fluid.
