Maryland Congressman Says Democrats Will Accept Election Results If They Are “Free and Fair”

Democrats are preparing to cook up an election fraud narrative if they lose.

Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin has promised to respect the results of the 2024 presidential election if former President Donald Trump comes out victorious, as long as the election is deemed “free and fair.”

The Maryland elected official made the comments during an appearance on the November 1 episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.”  Raskin’s remarks are similar to Trump, who also vowed to accept the results of the 2024 election provided they are fair and legal. 

“If it’s a free and fair election, we will do what we have always done—we will honor it,” Raskin said on Maher’s show. 

Raskin is a ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.  He noted that Democrats would potentially contest the election results if they believed the election had been “stolen.”

“No, we’re not going to allow them to steal it in the states, or steal it in the Department of Justice, or steal it with any other election official in the country,” he remarked.

“If it’s a free and fair election, we will do what we’ve always done,” he stated. “We will honor it.”

Raskin was part of a group of representatives from the Congressional Progressive Caucus who rejected the certification of the 2016 election, when Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton. He also did not attend Trump’s inauguration, declaring in a statement in that instance that the “moral and political legitimacy of this presidency are in the gravest doubt” and that he “cannot risk my presence at his inauguration being interpreted as any kind of endorsement of the normality of our situation.”

Raskin led the second impeachment attempt against Trump. He claimed on Maher’s program that the former president was “trying to commit election fraud” during the 2020 presidential election cycle.

The lawmaker alluded to Trump’s phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in January 2021, when Trump allegedly urged Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes,” a number that would have put Trump over the top in Georgia. 

Several media outlets released a transcript of the call demonstrating that Trump stated that he won Georgia and called on state election officials to investigate potential election irregularities. Raffensperger refused to follow Trump’s request, highlighting that the state had done several recounts of the vote count.

“That’s not him trying to stop election fraud, that’s him being caught red handed trying to commit election fraud,” Raskin contended about Trump’s 2021 phone call. 

The constant talk about election irregularities is a sign that more and more Americans across the political spectrum are becoming disenchanted with the political system. It’s come to the point where the default position for both parties is to challenge the results of elections. This does not augur well for the stability of the US’s political health in the long-term.
